We want to recognise Tom Ashe, British trumpet player and his wonderful initiative to bring brass music to the poorest children in Rio’s favela Pereira de Silva, with music lessons three times a week.

The long-term aim of the program is to create a tradition of brass and percussion playing in the community, which combines Rio’s rich musical heritage with the jazz and second-line tradition of New Orleans.

During the 2016 Rio Olympics, the children were featured on the BBC’s coverage of the opening night of the games, and subsequently on BBC news.

Brilliant!
